What happened: Iván Herrera was named Friday to the National League All-Star team as an injury replacement for Shohei Ohtani, who is having fluid drained from his left knee and will miss the game. Nick Martinez, Ceddanne Rafaela and Munetaka Murakami were named American League injury replacements, subbing in for Ranger Suarez, Aaron Judge and Byron Buxton. All four are first-time All-Stars.

Why it matters: Rafaela, whose defense has already drawn leaguewide attention this season, becomes the third Red Sox All-Star, joining closer Aroldis Chapman and first baseman Willson Contreras. Suarez, who spent his first nine seasons in Philadelphia before signing with Boston in the offseason, went on the injured list Thursday with a strained left groin. Judge has not played since late May due to a rib stress fracture, and Buxton is dealing with a right hip impingement.

By the numbers: Herrera entered Friday batting .249 with 11 homers, 40 RBIs and a .780 OPS, and leads the league with 24 hit-by-pitches this season. Rafaela is hitting a 286 with eight homers, 39 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. Martinez carries the league's ninth-lowest ERA among qualified pitchers at 2.61 and has allowed three or fewer runs in 16 of his 17 starts. Murakami is batting .240 with 20 homers and 41 RBIs since returning Friday from a strained right hamstring.

What to watch: The All-Star Game is Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, where Murakami is also scheduled to compete in the Home Run Derby.
