What happened: The Washington Nationals face a complex trade deadline decision regarding starting pitcher Foster Griffin. After returning from a three-year stint in Japan on a $5.5 million contract, the 30-year-old left-hander has stabilized the team's rotation with 10 wins before the All-Star break.

Why it matters: Washington remains in the wild-card picture despite entering the year with rebuilding expectations. Dealing Griffin on an expiring deal could yield prospects to accelerate their timeline, while holding him bolsters their immediate playoff chances and preserves the option for a future extension.

What to watch: The front office's strategy will heavily depend on how the club performs in the weeks following the All-Star break.
