What happened: ESPN's Jeff Passan spotlighted five National League pitchers off to extraordinary 2026 starts. Shohei Ohtani leads with a 0.82 ERA and a .447 OPS against, while Cristopher Sánchez carries a 1.47 ERA and a 44.2-inning scoreless streak. Jacob Misiorowski (1.83 ERA, 100 K in 64 IP), Chris Sale (1.89 ERA, 38% chase rate) and Chase Burns (1.96 ERA, 34% whiff rate) round out the group.

Why it matters: Pitching at this level reshapes the NL playoff picture, giving each club a front-line anchor for a postseason rotation. Ohtani's continued two-way dominance extends a run Wire.report has tracked since April, when he allowed just one earned run across 24 innings. Sub-2.00 ERAs sustained deep into the season are rare and signal genuine Cy Young contention.

What to watch: Watch whether Sánchez's scoreless streak survives his next outing and if Ohtani can hold a sub-1.00 ERA into summer.
