49ers' contender status should not change during Jed York's suspension

The NFL said York's first three missed games already count toward the six-game ban, and he may return on Oct. 20.

Per the NFL: while the league’s investigation has been proceeding, Jed York has stayed away from the 49ers first three r Via @AdamSchefter on X

What happened: The NFL said Jed York was suspended for six regular-season games and fined $500,000, but his absence from San Francisco's first three games and league meetings already counts toward that penalty. The league also said he may return on Tuesday, Oct. 20. San Francisco is already 3-0 during that stretch.

Why it matters: Owners do not affect weekly contender status the way coaching, execution, and depth do, so this is more about optics than Sundays. A 3-0 start without York around is real evidence that the football operation can keep rolling. If the 49ers rise or fall over the next three games, that says more about the team than the suspension.
