What happened: Kurtis Rourke is competing to become Brock Purdy's backup in San Francisco, and the outcome carries roster consequences. A 2025 seventh-round pick out of Indiana, Rourke is a 25-year-old pocket passer with prototypical size at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds and an extensive college résumé of 45 starts. The 49ers have publicly praised his arm talent, processing, and command of the offense.

Why it matters: If Rourke proves he can win in a pinch during camp and the preseason, the 49ers gain the confidence to deal Mac Jones should a suitor emerge. Rourke is signed through 2028 on a cap hit under $1 million in 2026, a cost profile that makes him an attractive long-term insurance option behind Purdy. His development also shapes whether San Francisco re-signs Jones if no trade materializes after the season.

What to watch: Watch whether Rourke takes consistent first-string backup reps once camp opens and how he performs in preseason action. Strong showings could accelerate a Mac Jones trade if other teams call.
