What happened: Sean McVay called the turnaround too quick after Donald's two seasons away from football. Donald will remain in Los Angeles instead of traveling to Melbourne with the team.

Why it matters: McVay had refused to set an “invisible deadline” while Donald weighed returning, and that patience now extends to his debut. Waiting through the opener gives the veteran another preparation cycle before Los Angeles considers him for game action.

By the numbers: Donald is a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, eight-time first-team All-Pro and 10-time Pro Bowler.

What to watch: Attention turns to Donald's practice participation before the Rams' Sept. 21 home game.
