What happened: The 26-year-old Swedish defender agreed to a Swiss National League contract Sunday after remaining unsigned through NHL training camps. He hit free agency in July after serving as New York's seventh defenseman during its retool around Matthew Schaefer.

Why it matters: The exit closes a low-cost waiver experiment that never cracked a crowded blue line. Boqvist, the 8th overall pick in 2018, previously failed to lock in with Chicago and Columbus before the Islanders claimed him in January 2025.

By the numbers: 2024-25 with Islanders: 17 games, 2 goals, 8 points. 2025-26 with Islanders: 28 games, 4 assists. Draft pedigree: 8th overall in 2018.

What to watch: New York turns to younger depth options behind Schaefer. Boqvist gets a path to regular minutes in Switzerland.
