What happened: Atletico Madrid have been eliminated from the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League following their semifinal second-leg defeat to Arsenal. A first-half Bukayo Saka goal put the Gunners 1-0 up on the night and 2-1 ahead on aggregate, a margin Diego Simeone's side could not overturn. Arsenal advance to the Champions League final in Budapest, where they will meet either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich.

Why it matters: The result ends Atletico's European campaign and denies Simeone another shot at the trophy that has eluded the club since their 2014 and 2016 final defeats. For Arsenal, it is a first Champions League final in the club's history, a milestone moment for Mikel Arteta's project. The defeat also intensifies questions about Atletico's summer rebuild, with Antoine Griezmann already set to depart for Orlando City SC on a free transfer in July.

What to watch: Atletico turn to their domestic finish and a summer reset under Simeone, while Arsenal await the winner of PSG vs Bayern Munich for the Budapest final. Griezmann's MLS move and any further outgoing transfers will define Atletico's offseason narrative.
