What happened: Ben Hutton has joined the New York Islanders on a professional tryout agreement during regular-season play. The defenseman stated he is focused on delivering a strong showing to earn a full-time NHL roster spot.

Why it matters: The tryout provides New York with an immediate look at veteran defensive depth without an immediate contract commitment. A productive stint could solidify a spot on the blue line as the team manages its regular-season schedule.

What to watch: The Islanders will evaluate Hutton during upcoming sessions before deciding on a standard contract.
