What happened: Mookie Betts came up to start the game and did not challenge the call in his first trip to the plate. He has remained in the leadoff spot in October since Shohei Ohtani returned on Sept. 23.

Why it matters: Betts entered October off a .373 September with a 227 wRC+ and six homers, then added a seventh homer of the month on Sept. 26. That recent production keeps extra attention on his first plate appearance and the way pitchers attack him early.

By the numbers: Betts hit .373 with a 227 wRC+ and six homers in September through Sept. 22. He hit his seventh homer of the month on Sept. 26.

What to watch: Betts' next trips to the plate will show whether pitchers keep going after him early in the zone as the game unfolds.
