Boutte deal clears bigger roles for Kyle Williams, Mack Hollins

Jaylen Reed's arrival tightens New England's safety race.

What happened: New England sent Kayshon Boutte to Houston for Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick before final roster cuts. Efton Chism III now has a clearer path to the 53-man roster.

Why it matters: Drake Maye loses a trusted deep target, while Reed gives the Patriots a physical, versatile defender behind Craig Woodson and Kevin Byard. Reed's expected roster spot puts added pressure on New England's remaining depth safeties.

By the numbers: Maye's first and last touchdown passes to Boutte both came against Houston, each with Derek Stingley Jr. in coverage.

What to watch: Final cuts will determine whether Dell Pettus, John Saunders Jr. or Mike Brown can survive the tighter safety race. Williams and Hollins now have an opening to claim Boutte's vacated snaps.
