What happened: The Atlanta Braves recalled infielder Jim Jarvis to the major-league roster and designated infielder Rowdy Tellez for assignment. The corresponding move clears a 40-man roster spot for Jarvis. Tellez, a left-handed bat, had been in the organization after signing a minor-league deal earlier this year.

Why it matters: The swap signals Atlanta's preference for infield flexibility over Tellez's first-base/DH profile as the club sits at 50-34. Designating Tellez starts a window in which he can be traded, released, or outrighted, ending his time on the 40-man. For Jarvis, the recall is an opportunity to carve out a bench role with a contender.

What to watch: Watch whether Tellez clears waivers and is outrighted or claimed by another club, and how manager usage settles Jarvis into the infield mix.
