What happened: At 17, Rodden struck the charging bull with a PVC pipe, sidestepped it and forced it to the ground. His grandfather suffered a punctured lung, a broken arm and several broken ribs.

Why it matters: Rodden reached the majors on Aug. 14, nearly a decade after the farm incident. He followed with his first MLB hit, an eighth-inning double that produced his first RBI.

By the numbers: Before his promotion, Rodden hit .262 with 19 home runs, 65 RBIs and an .841 OPS in 92 Triple-A games.

What to watch: His defensive usage bears watching after he played second base, shortstop, third base and all three outfield spots in Triple-A.
