What happened: Fans placed signs outside the stadium after Cleveland named Deshaun Watson its Week 1 starting quarterback. The messages criticized both the Cleveland Browns and Watson.

Why it matters: The backlash complicates the rollout of Cleveland's most consequential lineup decision before the 2026 season. Cleveland begins with two road games before returning home in Week 3.

What to watch: Cleveland's first regular-season test comes on the road Sept. 13. Watson's play in the first two games will frame the response at the Week 3 home opener.
