What happened: The homer was one of four in a 7-1 win Tuesday. It followed his 38th three days earlier.

Why it matters: One more would give him consecutive 40-homer seasons. The late surge strengthens his position with the regular season winding down.

By the numbers: No. 37 tied the AL lead on Aug. 30; No. 38 moved him ahead on Sept. 5; No. 39 followed Sept. 8.

What to watch: The remaining schedule will determine whether he holds the league lead.
