Capitals add Cal Petersen on professional tryout

He posted an .896 save percentage in 33 AHL games

What happened: The 31-year-old goaltender will join Washington's 2026 training camp. The agreement gives him an opportunity to earn a contract for the upcoming season.

Why it matters: The move adds competition and organizational depth in goal without guaranteeing a roster spot. A strong camp could put Petersen in contention for a two-way deal.

By the numbers: Petersen went 13-16-2 with a 2.73 goals-against average and .896 save percentage across 33 AHL appearances in 2025-26.

What to watch: Washington opens its preseason Sept. 20. Petersen's camp performance will determine whether the tryout becomes a contract.
