What happened: Pereira takes one of the club's 26 active roster spots. The club has seven days to trade Velázquez or place him on outright or unconditional release waivers.

Why it matters: The move gives the Cardinals another outfield option for the regular-season roster. Any club claiming Velázquez would add him to its 40-man roster.

What to watch: Watch for Pereira's first lineup assignment and the resolution of Velázquez's DFA.
