What happened: The Cardinals' group will play for Peoria when the fall circuit opens Oct. 3 and runs into mid-November. The assignment keeps part of the system active after the rest of the minor league schedule has ended.

Why it matters: AFL spots are often used for players who lost time, need more reps or face winter roster decisions. For the Cardinals, the extra run can sharpen 40-man protection and Rule 5 calls before the offseason.

By the numbers: Tai Peete posted a 116 wRC+ across High-A and Double-A in an injury-shortened season. Catcher Sammy Hernandez logged a 17% walk rate, an 18% strikeout rate and a 140 wRC+ between Palm Beach and Peoria.

What to watch: Peoria opens play Saturday. The next read is which Cardinals prospects turn the extra workload into a stronger case before offseason roster deadlines.
