What happened

Denkey gave Cincinnati the early advantage, striking in the ninth minute. The visitors carried that lead deep into the first half before Columbus changed the match with two goals in quick succession.

Jamal Thiaré pulled the Crew level in the 42nd minute, heading in a corner to make it 1-1. Gazdag then converted from the penalty spot six minutes into first-half stoppage time, sending Columbus into the break with a 2-1 lead.

Neither side added to the scoring after halftime, allowing Gazdag’s penalty to stand as the winner. Cincinnati’s Gerardo Valenzuela was sent off four minutes into second-half stoppage time, providing the final major incident of the match.

The victory lifted Columbus Crew to 19 points and moved them within four points of Cincinnati. Columbus improved to 5-8-4, while Cincinnati dropped to 6-6-5.

For the Crew, the response carried as much significance as the result. Columbus conceded inside nine minutes but erased the deficit before halftime, then protected the lead through the second half.
