What happened: The Washington Commanders elevated defensive tackle Byron Cowart from the practice squad to the active roster. Defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton was downgraded to out due to a pectoral injury.

Why it matters: Newton's absence thins Washington's interior defensive front, forcing an immediate adjustment in defensive snap distribution. Cowart, who entered the NFL as a 2019 fifth-round draft pick by the New England Patriots, provides veteran depth on the interior line.

What to watch: Watch for Cowart's snap share in the defensive tackle rotation as Washington manages front-seven personnel.
