Cubs weigh Shaw or Ramirez trade from infield surplus

Both posted .320-plus OBP with similar slugging

What happened: Chicago opens the winter with Alex Bregman, Dansby Swanson, Nico Hoerner and Michael Busch set across the infield, leaving the same Matt Shaw who went all out to make a catch and Pedro Ramirez as reserves who would start elsewhere. Shaw played more outfield than infield in 2026 after starting at third in 2025, while Ramirez has also been tried in the outfield.

Why it matters: Both profile best at second or third base without the corner-outfield power contenders chase, making one expendable for pitching or outfield help. Ramirez is two years younger with an extra year of control, while Shaw carries recent everyday third-base experience despite similar offensive production.

By the numbers: Shaw and Ramirez posted .327 and .321 OBPs with .410 and .402 slugging marks last year. Ramirez graded better defensively last year with Shaw playing out of position; Shaw was stronger at third in 2025.

What to watch: Watch whether Chicago shops one infielder for a pitcher or outfielder this winter.
