What happened: A pitch struck Mead’s wrist in the fourth inning Monday, and he exited before the bottom of the fifth. Initial X-rays were negative before subsequent testing found the fracture.

Why it matters: Boston had acquired Mead as right-handed infield help one day before his debut. His absence reopens a lineup need the club had just addressed.

By the numbers: Mead arrived in Boston batting .254/.352/.500 with 17 homers, 17 doubles and 48 RBIs in 87 games this season.

What to watch: Boston’s next roster move will show whether it pursues another bat before Monday’s 6 p.m. ET deadline.
