Devils' crowded roster puts prospect development in focus at Utica

Luke Evangelista's arrival further tightens call-up competition.

What happened: The New Jersey Devils could send prospects to Utica as they navigate a crowded NHL roster before the 2026-27 season. Lenni Hameenaho and David Rittich are among players who could begin in the AHL depending on roster moves.

Why it matters: More forward depth limits immediate opportunities even when injuries create openings. Strong AHL development could still position younger players for later NHL roles or future transactions.

By the numbers: Two forward prospects cited for further development combined for 51 points in 117 AHL games last season.

What to watch: Watch training-camp assignments and whether New Jersey makes a trade that creates NHL roster space.
