What happened: Patrick Mahomes is working back from a torn ACL and LCL suffered in December, with a stated goal of playing Week 1 for the Chiefs. Kansas City went 6-8 even before the injury, and Justin Fields sits behind him as the contingency plan if the knee isn't ready.

Why it matters: A two-time MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion doesn't lose that status over one down season and a knee injury. Mahomes still has Travis Kelce and a healthy Rashee Rice, who's back after his suspension, giving him more that his skeptics.
