What happened: The Calgary Flames are fielding trade interest in center Morgan Frost and right-shot defenseman Zach Whitecloud as the organization focuses on a long-term rebuild. The Montreal Canadiens remain a potential landing spot given their positional needs for center depth and a right-sided blueliner. No official agreement is imminent, as Calgary remains patient in evaluating offers.

Why it matters: Montreal is seeking a stopgap center, and Frost enters the final year of his contract carrying a $4.375 million cap hit before unrestricted free agency. Acquiring Whitecloud, who has two years remaining at a $2.75 million cap hit, would balance the defense and allow Lane Hutson to play his natural left side. The Flames have previously shown interest in Montreal defenseman Arber Xhekaj, who could serve as a starting point in negotiations.

What to watch: Calgary will continue to evaluate the trade market for both players as the offseason progresses.
