What happened: Styles wanted a number in the 50s after seeing franchise linebackers honored in his position room. The rookie viewed the choice as a way to recognize the players who preceded him.

Why it matters: The number ties a first-round rookie's identity to an established NFL linebacker tradition. It also sets a visible standard as he prepares for his regular-season debut.

By the numbers: Styles is listed at 6-foot-5 and 243 pounds.

What to watch: The next marker is whether Styles carries No. 52 into the regular season.
