What happened: Matheson will miss Tuesday's game against Buffalo after being listed as day-to-day. Beck will make his first appearance of the season. Fowler will start in net for the scheduled matchup with the Sabres.

Why it matters: Absence on defense changes the rotation for Tuesday. Beck's debut offers a game-speed evaluation early in the season. Naming the starter early sets the plan against Buffalo.

What to watch: Next is puck drop against Buffalo and any update on Matheson's availability after Tuesday.
