What happened: Minnesota drafted McCarthy 10th overall in 2024 out of Michigan. He completed 140 of 243 passes for 1,632 yards in 2025. Cowherd raised the flag that O'Connell could not fix him.

Why it matters: Eleven touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 10 games is backup production. If O'Connell could not develop him with starter reps, a midseason reset in New York is a tougher task.
