What happened: MLB Network analyst Greg Amsinger projected that Shohei Ohtani will deliver the greatest season in baseball history in 2027. Amsinger pointed to a bounce-back mentality entering the offseason.

Why it matters: The projection follows Ohtani confirming plans to return to the mound next year after not pitching in a game since July 3. His 2026 campaign ended in a four-game NLCS sweep by the Brewers despite snapping a home run drought dating back to Aug. 18 in Game 4.

By the numbers: Ohtani has not pitched since July 3, 2026, and went without a home run from Aug. 18 until NLCS Game 4 on Oct. 15 amid a .212 league-wide postseason batting average.

What to watch: Offseason decisions remain pending on whether Ohtani will undergo surgery on his knee or bicep before preparing for his 2027 two-way return.
