What happened: The Montreal Canadiens are entering a pivotal offseason following an Eastern Conference Final appearance, leading to internal and public debate regarding the roles of young stars Kaiden Guhle, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Arber Xhekaj. While Slafkovsky has cemented his role on the top line, Guhle's recurring injuries and Xhekaj's defensive ceiling have become central talking points for the front office.

Why it matters: With Slafkovsky locked into a long-term extension through 2033, the Canadiens are prioritizing roster stability. However, Guhle's health — having missed 39 games last season — has sparked speculation that Montreal could leverage its defensive depth in trades to acquire a veteran top-line center. Xhekaj's role remains the most debated, as his physical presence is valued but his fit in the top-four remains a point of contention.

What to watch: Montreal's management will address trade rumors and potential extensions before the 2026 NHL Draft as they look to build on their division title.
