What happened: Smith entered with runners on first and second and nobody out, then struck out three batters to preserve a scoreless tie. He retired all six batters he faced without allowing a hit or walk.

Why it matters: Chicago improved to 68-62 and claimed the three-game series. Smith has supplied six scoreless appearances in his first seven major-league innings.

What to watch: Smith's next relief opportunity could come during the series beginning Monday against Texas.
