What happened: Miami remains interested in Thompson but reportedly prefers to pursue him after a buyout. That approach would avoid sending out a young asset in a trade.

Why it matters: Waiting preserves Miami's flexibility while keeping a proven shooter in its offseason plans. The strategy depends on Thompson becoming available outside a trade.

What to watch: Watch for any shift in Miami's position before the 2026-27 season.
