What happened: The Carolina Hurricanes are No. 1 in this weekend's NHL rankings, with the Edmonton Oilers at No. 2. The Vegas Golden Knights, Minnesota Wild and Tampa Bay Lightning follow in order to complete the top five.

Why it matters: The ranking puts Carolina ahead of Edmonton in the current pecking order. It also groups Vegas, Minnesota and Tampa Bay together as the nearest challengers entering the week's scheduled games.

What to watch: Upcoming scheduled games will test that order. The next weekend update will show who holds their place.
