What happened: Jack Hughes scored the overtime winner and celebrated by throwing his stick over the glass. The finish closed the home opener on one last touch from Hughes.

Why it matters: Hughes had already drawn preseason attention at the NHL Player Media Tour, so the overtime finish gives that buildup an early-season payoff. Game-winners from a marquee player tend to drive the first wave of October conversation around who is setting the pace.

What to watch: Watch whether Hughes follows the opener with another featured finish over the next few games. Early October scoring will show whether the jolt carries beyond one night.
