What happened: Before choosing basketball, Jalen Suggs played quarterback and defensive back in high school. His football résumé included a state championship.

Why it matters: Suggs became the first athlete to win Minnesota’s Mr. Basketball and Mr. Football awards in the same year. His quarterback background later carried into his long outlet passing on the basketball court.

What to watch: His football background remains a reference point for how he approaches contact, defense and transition passing.
