What happened: Late in Sunday's game against La Clippers, Jalen Williams drove against Derrick Jones Jr. and Kris Dunn, landed awkwardly on his left leg and remained on the floor for several minutes before leaving on a stretcher. Paolo Banchero suffered a Grade 1 right high-ankle sprain against Minnesota and is expected to miss four to six weeks. Kristaps Porzingis of the Golden State Warriors is listed Out and Not With Team, with Golden State exploring the trade market around his contract.

Why it matters: Williams had started fast after playing only 33 games last season and missing much of the playoffs, making another extended absence central for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Orlando loses an All-Star opener of 35 points and 10 assists, shifting the offense to Franz Wagner while Jalen Suggs exited Sunday with a non-contact knee injury. Detroit also loses its middle anchor during a 3-0 start, with Jalen Duren to be re-evaluated in two weeks for a right hamstring strain suffered on a drive involving Giannis Antetokounmpo.

By the numbers: Williams: 33 games last season. Banchero-Wagner: 24 games together last season; 40 games together in 2024-25. Banchero: 35 points, 10 assists in opener; out 4-6 weeks. Duren: 22 points, 9 rebounds in opener; re-evaluated in 2 weeks. Cooper Flagg: 32 points in opener; Questionable with left shoulder sprain. Porzingis contract: two years, $40 million, $3 million guaranteed next year. Records: Detroit Pistons 3-0, Charlotte Hornets 2-1, Dallas Mavericks 1-2.

What to watch: Oklahoma City awaits further evaluation on Williams while Orlando and Detroit adjust rotations without Banchero and Duren.
