What happened: The Board of Visitors approved termination of Sun Belt membership Monday morning and authorized an application to the American Conference. The planned transition takes effect no later than July 1, 2028.

Why it matters: The switch changes James Madison's conference footprint and scheduling pool for football and Olympic sports. It comes as the Sun Belt weighs higher exit fees with a vote expected later this week.

What to watch: Watch for formal acceptance by the American and finalized exit terms with the Sun Belt. Sport-by-sport transition dates should follow.
