What happened: Sunday Night Football on NBC projected Jaxon Smith-Njigba as a contender to challenge the NFL single-season receiving yardage mark of 1,964 yards set by Calvin Johnson. Through the opening stretch of the 2026 regular season, the No. 5 player on the NFL Top 100 list has also recorded eight receiving touchdowns.

Why it matters: ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky noted that while Johnson dominated with size, Smith-Njigba is winning on skill as Seattle's primary target. The Seattle Seahawks reinforced their offensive line Tuesday by acquiring six-time All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson from Indianapolis for 2027 third-round and 2028 fifth-round picks, upgrading pass protection for the offense.

By the numbers: Per ESPN (as of 2026-09-29), Smith-Njigba finished the 2025 season with 119 receptions for 1,793 yards and 10 touchdowns across 17 games with the Seahawks, finishing 171 yards shy of Johnson's single-season record. Seattle drafted him 20th overall out of Ohio State in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

What to watch: Smith-Njigba's single-season yardage pace continues as Seattle integrates Nelson into the starting offensive line for the remainder of the 2026 regular season.
