What happened: Commissioner Rob Manfred selected Justin Verlander to the All-Star Game as a Legend pick. The special designation secures the pitcher a roster spot for the event.

Why it matters: The selection provides a platform to honor Verlander on a national stage during his final season. He announced his intention to retire at the end of the year and has been sidelined recently with a hamstring injury.

What to watch: His availability to pitch in the exhibition depends on his recovery from the hamstring strain.
