What happened: At Tuesday’s introduction, the 36-year-old guard said Miami’s demanding environment and postseason ambitions drove his move. He joined the Heat after agreeing to a buyout with Dallas and clearing waivers.

Why it matters: Thompson could alternate between starting and supplying veteran shooting off the bench. Miami adds him to a core featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

By the numbers: Thompson played 69 games for Dallas in 2025-26, starting eight and averaging a career-low 11.7 points. His scoring average has declined from 21.9 in 2022-23 to 17.9, 14.0 and 11.7 over the next three seasons; he shot 38.3% from three last season.

What to watch: His first preseason appearances will show how his shooting fits within Miami’s rebuilt rotation.
