What happened: Competition is driving Los Angeles Lakers camp after a summer overhaul left multiple starting spots up for grabs ahead of the 2026-27 season. At least one contract spot is also in play as the roster shake-up carries into preseason. The squeeze tightened after the Lakers signed forwards William Kyle III and Cole Swider on Sept. 28.

Why it matters: The camp battle will shape the opening lineup and early rotation for a team that remade much of its supporting cast this offseason. It also has direct roster consequences because one of the back-end camp spots still has to give before the regular-season limit kicks in.

By the numbers: Roughly half the roster has turned over, multiple starting spots remain open, and the Lakers must cut down to 15 players by Oct. 20. William Kyle III and Cole Swider were added Sept. 28, further crowding the fight for final places.

What to watch: Preseason practice and exhibition rotations should show which newcomers get the first crack at the open jobs. The next few weeks will also reveal whether the Lakers keep the competition open deep into October or start separating the field early.
