What happened: The reigning world champion believed a front-row start was within reach at Circuit of the Americas before exceeding track limits on his second Q3 flyer. That infraction cost him two spots and leaves him sharing the fourth row with McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri after the pair finished Q2 in fifth and sixth.

Why it matters: Starting from row four leaves McLaren trailing pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli, whom Norris recently rated two levels above George Russell, and second-place qualifier Max Verstappen. The qualifying setback also stalls immediate momentum for the team's experimental MCL40 floor upgrades, which debuted in Austin after 17 rounds.

By the numbers: United States GP qualifying top five: P1 Kimi Antonelli, P2 Max Verstappen, P3 Isack Hadjar, P4 Charles Leclerc, P5 Lewis Hamilton. Norris clocked P5 in Q2 before his deleted second Q3 run dropped him from P6 to P8.

What to watch: Norris and Piastri will launch from the fourth row in Sunday's United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas as they work to recover positions against the front five qualifiers.
