What happened: Rivas entered as a pinch-runner in the eighth before lining a single to center. A solo homer had erased a one-run lead in the ninth.

Why it matters: The victory kept his club within reach of the division lead and final wild-card berth. It also salvaged the result after a late blown save forced extra innings.

By the numbers: His club improved to 61-68, four games out of first place and three games behind the final wild-card spot. The opponent remained 74-55 with a five-game wild-card cushion.

What to watch: Rivas' role bears watching after he delivered the winner off the bench.
