What happened: Jon Heyman reported Seattle received permission to interview Joe Espada as its managerial search widens. The club prefers candidates with prior dugout experience, putting Rocco Baldelli, Brandon Hyde and David Ross in the mix. The opening is tied to a talented roster and near-term contention.

Why it matters: Seattle is running its first open search in more than a decade, raising the stakes of the hire. An experienced hire would inherit a roster built to contend rather than rebuild. The timing overlaps with the Championship Series round, which can slow formal interviews.

What to watch: Watch for interview dates and whether Seattle expands the list beyond experienced managers.
