What happened: Auston Matthews plays his 700th NHL game tonight with the most goals through 700 games played, ahead of Alex Ovechkin. The mark was noted ahead of Tuesday's 11-game schedule.

Why it matters: Staying ahead of Alex Ovechkin's scoring pace puts Matthews against the league's defining goal-scoring standard at the same career stage. It frames his production in historic terms early in the 2026-27 regular season.

What to watch: Next is tonight's game, where Matthews can add to his 700-game total.
