What happened: McLaren said its straight-line shortfall after Bahrain GP qualifying in Malaysia came from running lower selected gear ratios than other Mercedes-powered cars. The team framed the problem as a recurring tradeoff after another qualifying session in which it gave away speed on the straights.

Why it matters: That compromise matters at Sepang because long full-throttle sections can punish a car that is down on terminal speed once overtaking and defense start to decide positions. It also keeps attention on McLaren as the 2026 title race turns on small setup gains from one weekend to the next.

What to watch: Sunday's race will show whether the team can recover the deficit through tire management or corner performance over a full stint. Further post-race comments should clarify whether the compromise was specific to Bahrain qualifying or part of a broader pattern.
