What happened: Todd Monken said competition between the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills became edgy without going too far. The session gave Cleveland work against a different roster before the teams meet in the preseason.

Why it matters: Controlled intensity creates a more useful evaluation environment than a game stripped of much of its regular-season scheme. Cleveland should treat this work as its real dress rehearsal and use Saturday for depth decisions.
