What happened: The Washington Nationals acquired left-handed reliever Reiver Sanmartín from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for right-handed relief prospect Robert Cranz. Sanmartín had been designated for assignment by the Giants on Tuesday before San Francisco worked out the trade with Washington. Cranz, a 23-year-old former seventh-round pick, heads to the Giants organization.

Why it matters: The move addresses Washington's bullpen depth as both clubs reshape their 40-man rosters ahead of the 2027 season. The swap marks the second transaction between the two front offices this month, following a trade where the Giants sent Nate Furman to the Nationals.

What to watch: Both clubs will finalize their roster designations ahead of upcoming offseason deadlines. Sanmartín is slated to compete for a bullpen spot in Washington's spring camp.
