What happened: The league issued its 2026-27 officiating focus areas ahead of preseason play. SVP, Head of Referee Development and Training Monty McCutchen narrates a two-part video with example plays illustrating the standards.

Why it matters: Published standards in October give staffs time to adjust screening, transition defense and late-clock contact before opening night. Early consistency limits midseason swings in whistles as rotations tighten.

What to watch: Preseason games will show how crews apply the listed emphases in live action. Staffs will adjust drill work based on early calls.
