What happened: Calgary acquired the 22-year-old defenseman in June as part of a six-piece deal with New Jersey. He later signed for five years and $36.25 million.

Why it matters: The commitment gives the Flames a long-term building block ahead of the 2026-27 season. It also gives the 2022 No. 2 pick a larger role after three seasons with the Devils.

By the numbers: Nemec set career highs with 11 goals, 15 assists and 26 points in 68 games during 2025-26. He has 49 points in 155 NHL regular-season games.

What to watch: Training camp will offer the first look at Nemec's role in Calgary's defense corps.
